The new business and society compact
Businesses exist in a social arena and the nature of this relationship is always evolving. While capitalism has undoubtedly led to tremendous global progress, it has also exacerbated some of our common challenges (e.g., excessive consumption and climate change, social inequities, and so on). My research tries to understand how we can soften the worst instincts of capitalism to make it more humane. It includes studying institutions (rules of the game) to ensure private enterprises continue to receive social licenses to operate. Corporate governance, social responsibility, sustainability, inclusion, entrepreneurship, and institutions are some of the common themes underlying my work.
